Animal Enrichment

What is Animal Enrichment?
Simply put, "animal enrichment" involves introducing diverse, stimulating elements into the living environments of captive animals based on their species-specific traits to encourage natural behaviours. This is essential for supporting physical and psychological well-being, fulfilling social needs, and reducing stereotypic behaviours. Enrichment takes many forms and generally falls into five main categories: food enrichment, environmental enrichment, sensory enrichment, cognitive enrichment, and social enrichment.

Our Commitment
The Animal Care and Veterinary Team of the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens has always been committed to animal welfare, ensuring that every animal under its care receives appropriate and attentive husbandry. By tailoring dynamic enrichment items to the specific habits and needs of different species, the team encourages the animals to express a richer diversity of their instinctual behaviours.
