Flight of Steps leading to Fountain Terrace

In the 1930s, the Hong Kong Government sustained its efforts to expand its water supply system, with a view to meeting the demand for potable water arising from population growth. In order to supply water to the area near Central, the Government found it imperative to build a service reservoir, namely "Gardens Fresh Water Service Reservoir", beneath the fountain terrace in the Gardens. To carry out the construction works, the Government had no alternatives but to demolish, raise and rebuild the old fountain terrace. Given the difference in levels between the new fountain terrace and the footpath near the Chinese War Memorial upon completion of the works, a flight of granite steps was built in the period of 1931 to 33 connecting the two places. We can see from the above that this flight of staircases bore witness to the history of water supply in Central during pre-war years.
